Metal Sculpture
With the advancements in technology throughout the course of the century, metal sculpture sophistication has improved dramatically. Artists such as, Frank Stella, Albert Paley, Judy Pfaff, Lee Bontecou, and Wim Delvoye have challenged the medium of metal, with their rather abstract sculptures.
Frank Stella born in 1936, in Malden Massachusetts, started off as a painter from Princeton University. Stella always said his paintings reflected sculptural qualities, which he called maximalist paintings. It wasn’t until the 1990’s that Stella moved onto freestanding metal sculptures for public places. I find his sculptures very abstract in nature, and most definitely would fit into the contemporary seen. However, I find it hard to match his paintings to his sculptural pieces.
Albert Paley received his BFA and MFA education from the Tyler school of art in Philadelphia. Paley is known around the world for his architectural metal sculptures that integrate hard edge shapes with an artistic sense. He welds huge steel shapes juxtaposed to one another to create lavish architectural spaces. His work is not too conceptual, but the forms he creates are most excellent.
Judy Pfaff a british artist born in London, England in 1946. Judy Pfaff has exhibited well throughout the 1970’s to the present. Her interesting use of wire steel cable welded and combined with other materials in a very loose and extravagant method makes her work appear very loud and sketchy in quality. Conceptually, and formally her work speaks for itself, I believe they work in a rhythmically together.
Lee Bontecou began sculpting in 1959, with her welded wire sculptural reliefs with canvas that reflect the man-made and natural world. Bontecou exhibited for a brief period in the 1960’s and 1970’s, but to took refuge in her studio in Orbisonia, Pennsylvania until recently. Her sculptures contrast organic form against a rigid mechanical shape. She uses other materials in her work, such as canvas, wire mesh and linen to build amazing concepts and forms of nature versus machine.
Wim Delvoye is a Belgian artist that uses gothic style laser cut steel patterns to fashion mammoth sized metal sculptures of industrial trucks. Delvoyes concepts deal with ancient architecture overtaking the industrial trucks and equipment. Delvoye’s work is well known through out the world and can be easily interrupted.

There is a beautiful tension in time. That which was will always be to a certain extent, though it is never the exact same at any two points in its existence. Bodies hold this same tension in their forms with an underlying strength and rigidity encased in a shell that quickly withers and erodes away.
With EtheReality, I worked with the balance between construction and natural deconstruction. The network of threads is an incredibly strong support system for the Abaca paper that I pulled and draped across. The paper was originally set in place while it was still wet so as to be able to embrace the form of the frame. Though it was set in place seamlessly, as it dried, it pulled apart to create gaping holes as though this structure that was built in a little more than a day had been here for countless years.

With this piece, I wanted to see how far a landscape can be pushed from a realistic interpretation yet still be recognizable as such. I took two flat cross sections and created pieces to connect them that fit both the slightly rounded exterior and the dynamically shaped frontal side. This was then attached to a board that had been similarly designed and constructed though it had no bookmatched side and the spines were left open for the viewer's inspection, indirectly opening the closed vertical form as well. I also sought a tension between the strong vertical and horizontal- an almost unbalanced sense. From there, I wanted light to play the leading role and set it up to produce a long shadow, causing the form to become a sundial. Not only did the light and shadow liven the area around the sculpture, it also created dynamic moments on the piece itself.

Taking inspiration from slobs and hoarders who seek comfort in an entourage of nastiness, I embarked on a journey to collect dryer lint from the dorms and the laundromat in Alfred. The fuzzy but filthy stuff may also read as garbage or dust, due to all of the items left in people's pockets (maybe some were yours!). Perhaps I'm not the only one who finds the variations in gray to be aesthetically pleasing. Perhaps I'm not the only one who finds a messy space as interesting as a streamlined one.

When we first thought about this installation we knew we wanted to use black lights to change people’s perception of space. We experimented with many things that reacted to black lights and finally settled on the neon paper with words printed on it.

We also wanted to create an environment that alluded to the awkward time in life that are the years between childhood and adulthood. We wanted to use two texts, one which is considered a children’s book and one that is considered an adult themed work to draw attention to this. We ended up choosing “And Tango Makes Three” by Justin Richardson and an excerpt from the “Kama Sutra.” One of us relates to each text.

Another thing that we wanted to know was how people will interact with the words. Will they make their own sentences or will they decided it is best not to touch the words? Will they spend an hour trying to find the right word and which story’s words will be used the most?

My installation is all about creating an experience for the viewer. Upon entering, the viewer is immersed in sound while their sense of sight and space is hindered. Everyone may have a different experience depending on your personal feelings, fears, and thoughts. Are you afraid of the dark? Will you become uncomfortable in an unfamiliar space? Do you hate to be alone? These questions directly relate to this installation…So I invite you to enter the space one at a time and sit/stand/stay as long as you need to fully experience the installation. You may shut the door behind you as far as possible, though it wont completely close, and please remember to flip the card so other viewers are aware when the space is in use.

A Self Portrait In Creation of Destruction

"A Self Portrait in Creation of Destruction" focuses on the exploration of the studio space in relation to the college studio setting and how, as students we struggle against time. Furthermore it explores the aspect that normally, we endure through this struggle creating objects we rarely can keep but have put ourselves entirely into.

To explore this concept I gave myself two days, one in which to create an object, and the second to destroy it. Because this piece is geared towards the self I decided the object to be created would be a self portrait from clay. I chose to work with 150 lbs of clay and on the first day, through the practice of creating several small portraits I would then create a larger one. On the second day, in order to create a parallel to the time it took to make it, I destroyed it in the same time frame. My days started at 12:30pm and ended at 8:30pm.

I chose to embellish my "studio" with several clocks and mirrors. As I worked I had alarm clocks going off through out the day, sounding closer and closer as my deadline neared. I used the space as I would a studio, drawing on the walls to help aid my thought process.

"Valley of the Insane"

The site of Kanakadea park is in fact located in what is Kanakadea valley, this valley encompasses much of Allegheny County. "Kanakadea"? With a little research into the history of the word came a plethora of information. This word is a term use by the Seneca, meaning "Valley of the Insane", the Seneca would travel out of their way to avoid passing through these lands, some historians believe it was sacred burial grounds. During British control over the colonies there was a treaty, this treaty was with the Seneca natives, and in this treaty the natives were allowed to keep Kanakadea Valley. However, when our independence was won from Britain all treaties went out the window and the Seneca were pushed further and further off of these lands. This site specific sculpture is a large scale reproduction of the Native American medicine wheel, this symbol was a way of life for the members of the Iroquois Nation, the Seneca included. The intent is to erect a bit of history that has been forgotten. The location being on an island is symbolic. This sculpture will stand alone, it no longer has a connection to the main land, being stumbled onto on occasion, just as I've stumbled onto this corner of history. This sculpture can be looked at from the distant shore, and an addition view from passing vehicles on Sate Route 21.

The Manscare

My project is the Manscare (tentative title) I am taking the classic idea of the scarecrow, and changing it to be from the perspective of a crow. The Manscare will sit menacingly in a tree so it can carry out its duty defending nature from people. the structure will be built with a wooden frame, stuffed with straw and dressed in found clothing. It will be roughly 5 feet tall.

Almond Lake Monster

Many bodies of water have their own creatures either genuine or fictional such as the Loch Ness Monster. What is to say Kanakadea park can't have its own monster in Almond Lake? My soft sculpture will portray a head of a sea monster sticking out of the water. There will be a square of 2x4's used to help support the monster resting on the existing stump sticking out of the water. The monster will consist of both fabric and a hay / straw mixture. All of which will be closed so none of it will escape in to the water.

This sculpture will entail a large cartoonish figure that is 10 t0 12 feet long, 3 to 4 feet wide, and 3 to 4 feet tall. The figure will be laying down in a relaxed position with arms up, elbows out, and hands underneath his head. This figure is an embodiment of human playfulness and wonder. It is meant to be a catalyst for others to be playful, contemplative, and relaxed. It also is an interactive sculpture for children and adults alike to lie on, climb on, touch and experience. The design will be simple robust, round, and with only 2 to 3 colors. The colors will be patterned such that one get a notion of shoes, pants, shirt, buttons, head, and mouth.

Proposal for Site Specific Soft Sculpture

Proposal

My project will be an extension on an already standing structure located in Kanakadea Park. The standing structure is a red fence leading up the side of a hill into the woods. The stress on our sculptures to be soft and child friendly has been a large contributor in the concept of my potential structure. The fence is old and missing a couple railings, there are also small gaps in the fence. Although these pieces of missing fence may go unnoticed by others, my piece will highlight these sections but transform the feelings of insecurities into an obsessed sense of protection. My extension, airbag like structures filling the gaps and missing parts of fence will create a neurotic feeling towards safety. The plush like balloons made of fabric and straw will create a cushiony padding where nothing can fall through, for example small children.

When I first visited Kanakadea Park, one of the first places I was drawn to was the peninsula to the right of the boat launch. This is an interesting location because it is intrusive to the body of water. From certain angles it almost divides Almond Lake. I would like to emphasizes this division by completely covering the peninsula with black fabric. I think this will make the natural structure feel even more intrusive to the body of water because it will look more like a black void or a crack than a land mass.

Flood of '35

Proposal

Thinking about the devastating flood that Hornell in 1935 that displaced most of the town’s residence. Soon after the U.S. government commissioned to have a dam near the city of Hornell so that such devastation would not happen again. The Almond Dam is the reason why kanakadea park exists. I think it would be interesting to create of pubic piece of public art having to do with this historical fact. I am planing on creating a smaller then life size house roof and having it float on the surface of the water( being stabilized by some weights on the bottom of the piece.) which would float somewhere in Kanakadea lake. I think this is an interesting to think about what the power of water can do, having it be a destructive material or something that can be controlled by human’s hands, these two factors are the total reason why this park is existing and why this piece exists.

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory has always been a childhood favorite. The idea that anything is possible as long as you put your mind to it. I wanted to grasp that concept, the early childhood mind set and incorpate that in my work. To bring that inner child back into everyones minds. Which is why i chose to make giant skittles that are about 3-4ft in diameter.The reason i chose skittles was that every child has tried a skittle. Its not like chocolate or nuts that children tend to have allergies to. These skittles will be spilled all over the park, you have the chance to find all of them. The number of skittles scattered around the park should be between 10-20.

Site Specific Sketch and Artist Statement

My intent of this public art project is to transform a small area of the park by introducing a foreign, incongruous color, and by introducing this color, I wish to engender a change (subtle, or profound) in the audience.

I plan to make about 10-15 spheres on wooden sticks and arrange them in a way that they are surrounding the audience (see pictures.)The color of the fabric (which I may dye or paint, depending what is readily available or easier to use) will be a bright red. The park has a variety of blue and green hues that creates a soothing effect in the body and mind. Red stimulates the mind and creates a faster heart rate in the body. From my color research, I want to introduce an agitating red color that makes the audience feel a subtle change in their body and/or mind when viewing my sculpture. Adding to the blatant red color, the spheres will be of varying height and design. Some will be straight or of organic form.
The height will add to the change in emotion because most of them will be taller than the average person. The spheres will be looking at or down on the person.The wood will be covered in fabric and packed with straw. The straw will most likely be glued on if the straw slips in the fabric.

"Inhabitation" Sketch and Artist Statement

For our installation we would like to use the rafters of the pavilion near the playground to create an underwater scene. This underwater scene would include jellyfish-like creatures, and would incorporate the entire underside of the pavilion roof. The piece would not hang lower than six feet to the ground for safety precautions. The materials included in this piece would be natural elements and garbage materials. We would like to use dead branches and garbage, such as plastic bags, from the park, if possible. We would be using the garbage and debris from the site to produce an art piece that inhabits the site, using waste to produce the piece. We believe that underwater creatures such as jellyfish would encourage the children to be interested in the piece and want to learn more about these kinds of creatures in an unintimidating environment. Also, marine animals are not as accessible to children, especially for education purposes, as land creatures.

Manufactured Landscapes Exhibition

Students in the Thursday/Friday class had a great turn out at their "Manufactured Landscapes" exhibition at the Village Hall on April 10th. Their work was inspired by their research of a particular location and the natural resources or narratives derived from it. They used information gained from a 3-week computer modeling and rapid prototyping workshop, in addition to newly acquired woodworking and metal fabrication techniques, to construct mixed media sculptures or manmade "landscapes". The students then curated and installed the exhibition and opened it to the public for two days. Below are some images of the show's opening. Individual works can be seen here. Field Trip To Autumn Hill Alpacas

The Monday/Tuesday class recently visited Cindy Vars at the Autumn Hill Alpacas farm to learn about how the animals are raised for their fiber. We got to meet and pet the animals and see how they live. We weren't able to see an alpaca be sheared (that doesn't happen until it gets warm) but we were shown many different types and colors of raw and treated fiber that can be used for felting. The students were shown how to dry and wet felt for their Tension/Second Skin assignment, which required them to weld a steel armature around which they were to wrap a "skin" material of their choice. Abstract

For our installation we were inspired by an experience at the Andy Warhol Museum. In one room sat a large couch that had a multiple ways to experience it, and could be described as 500 chairs in one couch because one could potentially sit in it 500 ways. We wanted to create a space that somewhat replicated this idea by not only the various ways to experience sitting, but the conversational aspect as well. The couch sat in the middle of the room so that no matter which way you sat you were facing a painting, however we have set up our space so that no matter which way you sit you are facing in towards another person. We want this space to create an environment where the viewer becomes a part of the piece itself by moving around and interacting with the other participants of the installation. We wish to invite the viewer into an experience where it can be as personal or as social as they wish. We know that this is a very stressful, so we hope to provide a stress free environment for the students of Harder to enjoy.

Prior to WWI welding was not trusted as a method to join two metals due to cracking.

Oxyacetylene Welding

We went on a whirlwind tour... we saw an MFA Thesis exhibition at Carnegie Mellon University, hung out in the South Side on Friday night, went to the Andy Warhol Museum to see some pop art, the Mattress Factory Museum to see some installation art, stopped by the Artists Image Resource to check out a fundraising event, and visited the artist Lenka Clayton in her studio.

Field Trip To Northern Lights Candle Factory

The Monday/Tuesday class recently went on a field trip to the Northern Lights Candle Factory in nearby Wellsville, NY. Andy Glanzman, the founder and president of the company, gave us a tour and told us how the company got started (he used to make very sculptural candles and sell them at craft fairs, and now he sells products to companies like Restoration Hardware and TJ Maxx). We learned about how wax, a material the students have used in their mold making and casting projects, is made from different natural and synthetic oils, and formed in molds or glass vessels. We got to experience the factory line and think about how the molding and casting process could be used for mass production.

1^st piece- The Banquet (1951)

March 9, 1906-May 23,1965. Considered an American Abstract Expressionist. Best known for creating large steel abstract geometric sculpture. Welded on an automobile production line before becoming an artist. Joined Art Students League of NY in 1927, began to study art history and sculpture. Created Terminal Iron works studio in 1940 which allowed him to increase the size of sculpture. Influenced by Picasso. WWII decreased the supply of metals available and the demand of abstract art so Smith drew and painted for the latter part of his career

Anthony Caro

1^st piece- Dream City (1996)

Born March 8^th 1924, currently working. Went to school for engineering and later studied sculpture. Classified as a Modernist. Mostly influenced by Smith. Often paints his finished pieces to make then look more uniform since he uses different grades of metals.Tutored at St Martin’s School of Art for a period of time. Credited with removing sculpture from a plinth or platform.

Antony Gormley

1^st piece- Angel of the North (1998)

Born in 1950 and grew up in London.Went to college for sculpture. Mostly uses the human body as a part of his subject matter. Uses his own body for metal casts a majority of the time. Quote-"My art is an attempt to materialize the place at the other side of appearance where we all live.”

Richard Serra

1^st piece- Fulcrum (1987) 55 ft tall, located in Liverpool street station, London.

Born November 2^nd 1939. Classified as an American Minimalist. Involved in the Process Art Movement. Holds an Honorary degree of Doctor of Fine Arts from Williams College.

1^st piece- Flamingo (1974)

July 22^nd 1898-November 11 1976 Comes from a family of artists. Created many public installations that are permanent. Moved to NYC when he decided to become an artist. Also studied in Paris during his college career. Also painted many of his pieces before executing them.

2^nd piece- Man 1967

Antoine Pevsner

1^st piece- 30 degrres dynamism

Jan 18 1886-April 12 1962 Classified as a Russian Sculpture. Considered a pioneer of 20^th century sculpture and kinetic art. Coined the term constructivism. Made new marriage of art and mathematics. One of the first to use blowtorch in sculpture.

2^nd piece- Elan 1958

Joe Pogan

After serving in the Navy went to school for art and welding. Worked as a professional welder for 20 years. Uses found metal for the “skin” of the piece and then uses round stock for the armature. Quote- “The stranger the piece of metal the better, since the end goal is an eye-catching, fascinating amalgamation of metal with odd nooks and crannies you can explore for hours.” Tries to leave no space between the pieces.

Steel is an iron alloy, with 2% or less of carbon. Manganese, chromium, vanadium and tungsten are also combined with iron in the production of steel. The amounts of metal which go into steel affect the tensile strength, hardness and ductility of it.

Alloys with higher amounts of carbon than steel is cast iron, with a lower melting point and castability. Wrought iron has lesser amounts of carbon, and results in slag inclusions. Comparatively, steel is nicely rust-resistant and weld well.

Iron ore straight from the mines contains a higher amount of carbon than is preferable. To reduce the carbon content, the metal is melted and processed before more metals may be added to the alloy.

Steel can be heat treated in various ways. Annealed steel has been heated to a high temperature to soften it. The temperatures to which steel is heated for this process varies according to the constituent metals of the steel alloy.

Quenching is when steel is heated and then rapidly cooled in water or oil, making the steel hard and brittle. Hereafter, the steel can be tempered - a particular type of annealing process - to make it more ductile and fracture-resistant.

Slag is a partly vitreous byproduct of iron. Basically, it is the crappy bits of carbonized metal when it has been heated and used a lot.
