The thing that I find the most intriguing about Rachael's piece is that it is made from canvas, which is normally associated with another form of art making. I like that she took it from its normal use and completely changed its purpose. On the other hand though, with the use of canvas comes the desire or reference to paint and besides a few, what seem to be ink or watered down paint marks the piece is almost barren of color. The absence of color is not a bad, there could be another purpose for the blank slate so to speak.
The piece as a whole is beautifully crafted. I know for a fact that canvas is very easy to fray so the fact that Rachael could cut the pieces of the protruding face without causing fraying is miraculous to me. I also enjoy the fraying texture that she used to shape the hair. It gives it a more realistic touch and the way the face is molded gives the piece a little bit more of a three dimensional feel than what I expect canvas to have.
