  1. The piece at hand was made by Joy Smith. At face value the work is constructed with a fiber like string and what look like craft beads. From how Joy explained her process, i had high hopes for what was to come. For the most part i was quite impressed with her outcome but somethings could be improved upon. For what it is, the construction is sound and the pice looks like her. The found objects being the beads are a smart choice because of the obvious ability to work with their color. The canvas being the string could have been a bit tighter in my opinion.
Continuing on the note of the string, the kitch aspect of using beads to create this portrait fell a tad bit short in the fraying towards the bottom of the piece. Not to say it takes enough away from the piece to really hinder its appearance, but if a frame like structure was built to tighten the strings it would have strengthened the craft feel of the piece.
Lastly, i really enjoy that the piece is two sided and has that 3d feel to it, as well as being a 2d portrait. After all is said and done, the sculpture overall is definitely a success and has numerous possibilities for future works.
