Research

The object I have chose is a copper refining still. It is interesting to me because though it is a basic object, it represents the technological breakthroughs humans come up with to overcome problems we meet in this world. With this distiller clean water can be extracted with contaminants, microbes can be killed, and questionable water supplies can be made safe for consumption.
The picture below is my location: Bingham, Utah, the largest open-pit copper mine in the United States until its closing in 1976. Like all mining towns before and after, the mining was the heart of all economic activity. For almost 40 years the mine created a stable economy for the town, but when the copper began to dry up, so did the jobs.
The connection between the still and the mine is the price we as humanity pay for our technological advances. The need for copper to refine liquids has literally opened new holes in the earth. The geography of Bingham has changed forever because of the copper found there, and maybe it was for the worst. For my object I will attempt to make something that hints to the dangerous game humanity is playing with the impact technology is having on the earth.
